Cloud computing is becoming increasingly popular. Saving money especially when it comes to IT is one of the main reasons businesses are really getting into it. Due diligence still needs to be applied and you need to make sure you fully research cloud first. Before you decide whether the cloud is the right route for your business you need to make sure you fully understand it.

The majority of cloud computing companies are keen to show you all the benefits the cloud can bring to your business. It can be hard to get a good grasp of cloud computing as a lot of the terminology is not very accurate as it’s had to accommodate a marketing audience. Many people associate cloud computing with SaaS, it is not software as a service. Software as a service simply refers to the actual software you’re using to run your application. As cloud computing is not a single piece of software it is not SaaS.

Another common misconception is that cloud computing is server virtualization which is also not correct. Although technically server virtualization is a part of cloud computing it’s just one smaller part. When we talk about cloud computing as a whole we mean running as many of your applications and work loads as possible on the cloud. When you’re just looking at getting your servers hosted remotely this is the practice of server virtualization.

It’s very common too to think cloud computing is the same process as Google. This is not surprising when you think internet, you think Google as it’s the dominating brand. It has similarities, Google uses huge data centers that manage all their data for them. The architecture used by Google is much more complex and completely unique to that used by any cloud hosting service.

Not every business will be able to deploy cloud computing. Depending on your industry regulations you might be restricted from hosting your data remotely even if you do use a private cloud. There may still be some computing you can do remotely but for the most part cloud won’t be practical for you.
