When new social media networks are launched, inevitable comparisons to Facebook and Twitter abound and its no different with Ping. If you have been living in a dark room these last few days, then you will have heard the hype and buzz around Apple’s attempt to pull in some of the enormous traffic created by Twitter and Facebook. Ping was herladed by Steve Jobs as the best parts of Twitter and Facebook combined, but you could easily throw in a lit tle of myspace for good measure.

Adding up the success of those three sites, with over 1 billion users, its easy to see why Jobs and Apple would want to emulate rather than re-invent and when you consider how many people buy something with the Apple logo on, Ping would appear to be something every desktop PC fan, mac and iphone user will crave.

With more than 160million people already using iTunes, Ping stands a great chance of being adopted and very early on. When you look at the bare facts and ignore the fact that Apple simply wants a piece of the social media pie, it actually makes a whole lot of sense and in some ways more so than either Facebook (you need to friend someone to find out about them) or Twitter (you often aren’t even sure the person you just followed is a human being). You see, unlike the other two sites, Ping allows you to strike up friendships with people who are actually in to the same music as you.

Yes you can find people on the other social media sites, but you take a chance that some of your existing friends, friended for entirely different reason other than music are in to the same thing. The great thing about Ping is that if you find someone else with the same tracks or bands in their playlilst, you are more likely to find further tracks you like and in doing so will line Jobs pocket further, especially as its highly unlikely your computer hardware is clever enough to have linked you to people on any other social medium capable of finding like minded people when it comes to a specific band.

Save for inventing a PC that uses no PC parts, Apple really seem to be able to do no wrong right now.
